“How was school today?” asked mom. “Fine,” answered the child.

“What did you do at school today?” asked dad. “Nothing,” answered the child.

Does this sound like your child when you ask about school? Asking the right questions will help you to really learn what your child did at school each day. The key is to ask questions that require an explanation or a “real answer” instead of just yes or no or fine. Below are a list of questions to ask. Don’t ask them all in one day or you will overwhelm your child. Choose one or two to ask each day and rotate them. Have fun learning more about your child!

General

  • What did you do today that you didn’t think you would be able to do?
  • What was the most challenging thing you did today?
  • What was the easiest thing you did today?
  • Who did you sit with at lunch?
  • Who did you play with at recess?
  • Who did you work with in a group today?
  • How was your behavior today?
  • What question did you answer in class today?
