Pre-Read:

Have your child look at the front cover and read the title. Then, have your child predict what he/she thinks might happen in the story. Discuss who the characters might be and where the story might take place based on the title and front cover picture. For higher level books, have your child read the summary on the back cover to get an idea about what he/she will be reading.

During Reading:

Stop periodically and have your child tell you what is happening in the story. What are the characters doing? What is the problem? Then have your child predict what might happen next.

After Reading:

Have your child retell you the story in his/her own words. Help your child to retell the story in the correct sequence. Have your child confirm his/her prediction. Was your prediction correct or incorrect? How do you know?
