Non-fiction Reading Strategies for All Ages

untitled (29)

Before your child starts to read a passage, preview the pictures, the captions, the headings, the words in bold print, and the summary. If the passage has questions at the end, have your child read a couple of the questions so he/she knows what information to read for in the passage.

During Reading:

While your child is reading, have him/her stop after a paragraph or two and give a summary of the information learned so far. Doing this after every couple of paragraphs will help your child retain the information.

After Reading:

Have your child summarize the passage and give details about what was learned in the passage. If there are questions to answer, always allow your child to look back in the passage to find or confirm answers.
