Beginning readers

Children begin reading as early as 2, but it’s not the reading that they do in elementary school. Reading at 2, 3, 4, and even 5 years old will look different. A 2 year old will look at pictures and, when prompted, tell what is in the picture. A 3 year old will look at the pictures and tell a little more detail about the picture. A 4 year old will “read” the pictures making up the story as he/she goes through the pages. A 5 year old will “read” the pictures as well, but may also read some of the words on the page or tell the story from memory having heard it read aloud many times. This reading will lead to deeper understanding of words and books when children go to elementary school.
